About this Event

Kick off Kim-Park Week with us by joining Kim-Park Program Director and Rare Books Curator Elizabeth Frengel for an in-person, hands-on introduction to items in our collections that are frequent targets of book bans. Items ranging from famous historically embattled books to contemporary titles that have become more recent targets of book banning campagins. In doing so, we plan to explore both the history of book bans and the way they have evolved in the modern world.

This program is presented in collaboration with the UChicago Banned Book Initiative. The UChicago Banned Book Initiative is building a comprehensive collection of books banned across the U.S. with the intention of helping to address the growing trend of censorship, lower barriers to sharing information, and support open inquiry and discourse. It seeks to serve as a tool for researchers exploring the intersection of censorship and book bans as well as a way for the public to engage with banned books. The growing collection is available for consultation at the UChicago Library by the public, for check out by UChicago users, and for borrowing through Interlibrary Loan.

Included collection items to be announced and this page will be updated with titles as they are selected.

This event is open to all with registration and will be held in The Hanna Holborn Gray Special Collections Research Center in Regenstein Library.

Event attendees without a University of Chicago ID may obtain a library entry pass on arrival by checking in at Regenstein Library’s entry desk and presenting a current, government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, CityKey, state ID, or passport to confirm identity.
