About this Event
Alison Syme: (Un)thinking Making; or, Lessons in Parroting
When is making considered a thinking or unthinking activity? Taking as a starting point accounts of 19th-century women’s handicraft and Berlin woolwork in particular as mechanical copying, this talk explores the role of repetition in textiles, painting, and contemporary art.
Alison Syme is Associate Professor of Modern Art at the University of Toronto. Her research primarily focuses on art and visual culture of the later 19th and early 20th centuries and explores intersections between art and the history of science as well as the role of metaphors in artistic practice and poetics.
