Mahler finished 9 symphonies, and his Ninth became one of the most powerful farewells in orchestral music. He didn't know he was dying when he wrote it. But the music knows. Every bar moves between foreboding and hope, tragedy and beauty, letting go and holding on. When the final movement dissolves into silence, You sit completely still, unwilling to break the spell.
MahlerFest 39 closes with this extraordinary work on Sunday, May 17 at Macky Auditorium. Kenneth Woods conducts the MahlerFest Orchestra in a performance preceded by Elgar's Cello Concerto — the visionary, deeply personal work Elgar wrote in the aftermath of World War I — performed by the remarkable Brinton Smith.
Two composers. Two farewells. One closing concert that earns the silence at the end.
A pre-concert talk on Bernstein, Mahler, and the Ninth with Kenneth Woods and Joseph Horowitz begins at 2:30 PM.
