About this Event
Mackenzie Mellen was diagnosed with Friedreich's Ataxia (FA)in 2021, a rare inherited neuromuscular condition that progressively impacts mobility, movement and balance. Now a 7th grader in Green School District, she navigates daily challenges with the support or her service dog, Zinger. FA affects only about 5,000 people in the U.S. and 15,000 worldwide. While there is no cure, new treatments and therapies offer meaningful ways to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
Mackenzie's story is about more than her own challenges - it's about raising awareness for everyone affected by FA. She volunteers for Canine Companions, advocating for people with disabilities and the role of service dogs, and has shared her message on WKYC's Ready Pet Go, with the Akron Rubber Ducks, and at the 2025 Canine Companions DogFest. Outside of her advocacy work and school, Mackenzie enjoys equestrian vaulting and wheelchair basketball to help keep her active and build strength and balance.

How can YOU help?
As Mackenzie's condition progresses, her mobility will become more limited. This Night at the Races Fundraiser aims to make her home fully accessible by raising $25,000 to install an elevator and other essential features. These improvements will help her maintain her independence, pursue her passions, and continue advocating for others - all while living without unnecessary barriers.
