A technical talk on sustainability in structural engineering
About this Event

IStructE London Young Members Group are pleased to announce a technical talk on sustainability in structural engineering and how engineers can respond to the climate crisis. The session will focus on practical ways to reduce carbon in projects and the role young engineers can play in driving more sustainable outcomes.


The talk will be delivered by Will Arnold, who will cover the following:


• What decarbonisation innovation is happening across different construction materials?;


• Working to be more circular in our designs,


• How to build up the knowledge to run embodied carbon calculations quickly enough to influence change?;


• Finding allies and routes to supporting all of this

Speaker

Will Arnold FIStructE HonFCABE CEng CEnv
Will Arnold is an award-winning engineer and environmentalist, and Head of Sustainable Materials for the Useful Simple Trust: a group of pioneering designers and consultants striving to regenerate our built and natural environment. His career has taken him around the world, engineering high-profile buildings across four continents, and pushing the boundaries of design and technology. Today, he is best known for advising designers, academics, global institutions and policymakers; challenging them to confront the construction industry’s role in the climate crisis and reduce the environmental impact of the sector. He is the lead author of the Part Z proposal to regulate embodied carbon in the UK, and has led the embodied carbon aspects of UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard since the project's inception. Will is also a Visiting Professor at the University of Bath where he teaches and researches regenerative design. Through his writing and public speaking, Will brings clarity, urgency, and optimism to one of the greatest challenges of our time.
