About this Event

Jacob Rogers, Ena Selimović, Soleil Davíd, and Kurt Beals are all accomplished writers who work as professional literary translators. We'll get to hear them talk about their experiences in the field and delve into the challenges and nuances of translating fiction, as well as the specificities of the source languages they translate from (including Galician, Filipino, Croatian, and German). We'll have some wine, snacks, mingling and book signing at the end. The panel will be moderated by Lost City Bookstore owner Adam Waterreus.

This event will take place at The Line hotel, around the corner from Lost City Books.

Jacob Rogers is a translator from Galician and Spanish. He has won grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the PEN/Heim Translation fund, and co-edited features of Galician literature for Words Without Borders, Asymptote, and The Riveter. His translation of Manuel Rivas' The Last Days of Terranova was published by Archipelago Books in November 2022, and his translation of Berta Dávila's The Dear Ones from 3TimesRebel Press in June 2023. He has translations forthcoming with Sublunary Editions and Lost River Press.

Ena Selimović is a Yugoslav-American writer and translator. She co-founded Turkoslavia, a translation collective and journal. Her work has appeared in Words Without Borders, Los Angeles Review of Books, World Literature Today, and The Paris Review, among others, and has received support from the American Literary Translators Association, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the National Endowment for the Arts. She holds a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Washington University in St. Louis.

Soleil Davíd is a poet and translator from the Philippines and is the author of the chapbook Equatorial (Aklat Ulagad, 2024). Her honors include grants and fellowships from the Bread Loaf Writers’ and Translators’ Conferences, PEN America, Barbara Deming Fund, and the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature. She received a BA with high distinction from the University of California at Berkeley and an MFA from Indiana University Bloomington. She is a senior editor for translation at The Margins.

Kurt Beals is visiting associate professor of German and Humanities Fellow in literary translation at the University of Richmond. He has translated works by Jenny Erpenbeck, Hermann Hesse, Reiner Stach, Regina Ullmann, and Anja Utler, among others. He lives in Virginia.
