PauseAI UK is joining Pull the Plug, Assemble, and other groups for a coalition march focused on the risks of advanced AI.
This will be the first UK protest where multiple AI-focused groups come together around shared concerns, and we expect it to be the largest protest to date focused specifically on AI safety and governance.
We will also hold a facilitated assembly at the end to reflect on public concerns about AI and what responsible development should look like. The protest will be non-violent, legal, and coordinated with the police to ensure it is accessible and family-friendly.
PauseAI UK’s demand
We do not yet know how to safely develop advanced AI systems. Despite this, companies are continuing to scale these systems quickly and competitively, while regulation and oversight remain limited.
Many people agree that this race dynamic creates serious risks. However, slowing down safely requires coordination. No single company or country can act alone without being undercut by others.
A necessary step toward effective international regulation is for the CEOs of leading AI companies to publicly state that they support a pause in principle on the further scaling of the most advanced AI systems. This means committing to slow or halt further scaling if all major developers do the same, with independent monitoring to ensure compliance.
One major AI company CEO, Demis Hassabis of Google DeepMind, has said he would support a pause in principle. We are calling on other AI company leaders to make the same commitment.
At this protest, we will gather outside OpenAI and march through King’s Cross, where several major AI companies are based, to make this demand clear:
We call on AI company CEOs to publicly support a pause in principle as a step toward binding international regulation.
