About this Event

We are excited to present another Filmmakers Showcase, featuring Asian-Canadian filmmakers with ties to the local community. This showcase features the short films of Dave & Quin Cheung, Eunice Hau, Yuqi Kang, and Steph Wong Ken. Each story speaks on the themes and experiences of the diaspora community, through elements of food and family, while weaving through past and present generations.A Q&A with the filmmakers will follow.

Doors open at 3 pm, screening begins at 3:30pm

CHEF STORIES
Dave & Quin Cheung

Chef Stories follows four diverse chefs from Calgary and Canmore who share their personal stories of passion, resilience, and creativity. From farm-to-table innovators to masters of multicultural cuisine, each chef's style reflects their cultural heritage, curiosity, and deep connection to the local community. With each plate, these chefs showcase their unique ability to bring people together, bridging cultures, traditions, and flavours that make southern Alberta a true culinary destination.

Dave & Quin Cheung are a husband and wife team of storytellers based in Calgary.Over the past two decades, photography and filmmaking commissions have sent them to document stories worldwide, including those in Italy, Argentina, Indonesia, Panama, Spain, India, Thailand, Germany, Greece, and across North America. From shooting world-class performers on the largest of stages to documentary films in the slums of Indonesia, their subjects have varied considerably. Still, the story of human connection through the lens of cinematic beauty is always their priority.

Eunice Hau

A Chinese-Indigenous couple struggles with their separate traumatic family backgrounds—while the past defines their present, will it also define their future?

Eunice Hau is a Calgary-based director, writer, and producer, with a passion for telling heartfelt stories featuring those with marginalized voices. She holds a BA from the University of Calgary and is a SAIT Film and Video Production alumnus. Short film credits include The Re-Membering; With Us; and Ginger Beef web series pilot. She is currently focused on screenwriting and keeping tabs on her toddler!

On the evening of an unseasonably warm Moon Festival, a Chinese immigrant mother goes about her ordinary routine of cooking dinner while controlling her daughter’s every move with a sharp tongue. But what is brewing beneath the surface? As night falls, a sinister figure emerges to threaten this small household.

Yuqi Kang is a Mongol Chinese Canadian filmmaker whose work moves fluidly between the intimate and the epic. She is the founder of Blue Goat Films.Her feature documentaries, A Little Wisdom (2017), 7 Beats Per Minute (2024), and Fruit Is Ripe (2026), have screened around the world and have garnered numerous awards.She is a DOC NYC 40 Under 40 honouree and an alumna of Berlinale Talents, TIFF Directors' Lab, the Canadian Film Centre Directors' Lab, the Eggcelerator Lab at Chicken & Egg Pictures, Tribeca Film Institute, Hot Docs Accelerator Lab, the Canadian Academy for Women Directors, and FIRST Lab in China.

THE LONG GOODBYE

A young woman struggles to escape the front door of her aunty’s house, a space of gossip, connection, and complicated family expectations.

Steph Wong Ken is a writer and director raised in Miami, now based in Toronto. She has been writing professionally for over ten years, and have published short fiction as well as non-fiction essays and reported features. She recently transitioned into writing for film and TV and received a Canada Council for the Arts grant in 2023 to write and direct her first short film, The Long Goodbye.As a Chinese Jamaican third generation immigrant, her work focuses on the humour and drama of intergenerational relationships, exploring multiracial identity, belonging, and the complexities of finding community.
