Black Women’s Health & NHS Inequalities – Event Brief
As part of our “A Place to Belong” programme, we are creating a vital space to centre the health and wellbeing of Black women—highlighting the specific challenges they face when navigating the NHS, from sexual and reproductive health to gynaecological conditions such as fibroids.
Black women in the UK continue to experience significant health inequalities. They are three to four times more likely to experience complications during pregnancy and childbirth compared to white women. In addition, conditions such as uterine fibroids disproportionately affect Black women—often developing earlier, presenting with more severe symptoms, and leading to more invasive treatments that can impact fertility, mental health, and overall quality of life.
Beyond clinical outcomes, many Black women face systemic barriers within healthcare systems. These include delayed diagnoses, pain not being taken seriously, cultural misunderstandings, and gaps in communication and trust. From accessing sexual health services to receiving appropriate gynaecological care, these inequalities highlight the urgent need for culturally competent, responsive, and equitable healthcare provision.
This event will bring together health professionals, community voices, and support services to explore these issues openly and constructively. We are pleased to welcome guest speakers including representatives from NHS North Central London, Dr Loretta Chindo-Besong (GP and children’s author), and Chanelle Edwards from Bet Know More, who will address the often-overlooked harms of gambling within Black African and Caribbean communities and its wider impact on wellbeing.
In addition, Better Lives Islington Alcohol and Drug Services will be offering acupuncture sessions, providing a holistic approach to health and wellbeing and supporting stress reduction and recovery.
Together, we aim to:
- Raise awareness of Black women’s health inequalities
- Encourage open and informed conversations
- Promote culturally competent care and advocacy
- Connect the community with trusted services and support
- Empower Black women to take control of their health journeys
This is more than a discussion—it is a call to action. By working collaboratively with healthcare providers, community organisations, and lived experiences, we can begin to address these disparities and create a future where Black women are heard, respected, and receive the quality care they deserve
