📚 Lecture: “Beethoven vs. Napoleon”
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Tom Rizzuto
For most of Beethoven's adult life, he was embroiled in a bitter feud with Napoleon Bonaparte—one that Napoleon was blissfully unaware of. Initially inspired by Napoleon's revolutionary ideals, Beethoven dedicated an entire symphony to him, but eventually grew disillusioned with the French leader.
Join us for an intriguing lecture with Dr. Tom Rizzuto as he explores how the fallout from Napoleon's campaigns in Austria caused significant stress for Beethoven. This conflict inadvertently derailed the composer’s finances, contributed to the flop of his first and only opera, and even created political divisions within the van Beethoven family.
Dr. Tom Rizzuto is a professor of music history, guitar, and media at Molloy University and SUNY Old Westbury. He holds degrees in music education, musicology, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership for Diverse Learning Communities. His research examines the intersections between music and cultural shifts and has been featured in various publications and podcasts.
Don’t miss this opportunity to delve into the dramatic relationship between Beethoven and Napoleon with Dr. Tom Rizzuto!
