This is a 2 part course with gradual progress. The first part of this course we will go through instrument techniques and learn the most basic patterns. The second part of the course we will go through more advanced rhythms and put the instruments together in a full bateria.Part 1: September 15 – October 20 (6 weeks)
Goal: Basic technique training for all instruments, with a particular focus on individual skill development.
Focus areas:
Introduction to Samba and Brazilian Rhythms:
Understanding the structure of samba – basic rhythms, energy, and flow.
Introduction to the key instruments: surdo, caixa, tamborim, repinique.
Individual Technique:
Technique training for each instrument, with weekly progression.
Learning proper hand positioning, striking technique, and coordination.
Building endurance and tempo through repetitive exercises.
Ensemble Play:
Basic ensemble exercises between different instruments.
Listening to others in the bateria to develop a strong musical connection.
Self-Practice: Each student will be encouraged to practice at least 30 minutes at home during the week to refine their technique. Teachers will provide specific homework based on individual skill levels.
Weekly plan for Part 1:
September 15: Introduction to samba, basic technique on tamborim and caixa in groups with individual instructors (Marius, Thomas, and Hallvard).
September 22: Focus on tamborim and caixa. Individual rhythms.
September 29: Ensemble play of tamborim and caixa in bateria. Focus on tempo.
October 6: Ensemble exercises, tamborim and caixa. Timing of tamborim in relation to caixa.
October 13: Full bateria session, focusing on rhythm comprehension and musical unity.
October 20: Review and technical deep dive. Preparing students for Part 2.
