« The rose is a garden where the trees hide.» Jalal al-Din Rumi
Carpets are hidden from view. For two centuries the East and the West have been weaving a shared type of music. The attraction and the fascination they have with one another flourishes with beautiful sounds that transcends the pompousness of exoticism.
This project tells the story of a garden at the crossroads of Europe and the Middle East. With one foot in the present, the composers continue to draw upon their cultural heritage as well. It is a marvellous combination of styles which grows with them, continually renewing itself.. On a warm summer’s night, we hear them whisper in a low voice, as they exchange their dreams in the cool night of their burgeoning garden. From ethnomusicological research to sweet exotic fantasies, Layla Ramezan explores this hidden chapter of musical history. Nestled between Western Classical Music and The Music from Middle East , there are a thousand and one different faces to this music.
The Swiss-French pianist of Iranian origin, Layla Ramezan, has always sought to create links between her Persian origins and the classical music that she encounters daily. As a concert pianist, Layla performs regularly in France and Switzerland, as well as in many places further afield. She has recently appeared in recitals at the Collège des Bernadins in Paris, Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Princeton University, Piano Salon Christophori in Berlin, Steinway Series Concert in Floride, Teatro Pliteama Gribaldi in Palermo, Orsolina 28 in Moncalvo, Marmottan Museum in Paris, Victoria Hall in Geneva, Royal Irish Academy in Dublin, Aga Kahn Museum in Toronto, Roodaki Hall in Tehran, Hafez Hall in Shiraz, and at major festivals such as the Athénéennes in Geneva, the Schubertiade in Sion, Festival Crans-Montana in Switzerland et Bari Piano Festival and Alba Music Festival in Italy.
