About this Event
Painting becomes instrument. Sound becomes structure. The studio becomes a stage.
The Layered Sounds Project is a live interdisciplinary performance created by visual artist Melanie P. Brown and composer and electronic performer Ryan Ingebritsen. During each performance, Brown paints a new work on canvas while two contact microphones capture the subtle vibrations and resonances produced through the act of painting. Every brushstroke, scrape, and movement across the surface becomes part of the sonic material.
Composer Ryan Ingebritsen processes these live signals in real time, transforming the sounds of the canvas into a multi-movement electronic composition. The performance unfolds as a dialogue between image and sound, where painting generates music and music shapes the experience of the painting’s creation.
The result is both a live studio session and an experimental musical performance. A work of visual art emerges while the canvas itself functions as an instrument.
Two short performances will take place during the afternoon. Visitors may attend either performance or stay for both.
