With roots that stretch back at least 1000 years, Kutiyattam is one of India's oldest living theatrical traditions. It is a combination of ancient Sanskrit theatre with elements of a regional performance tradition known as Koothu
Kutiyattam is officially recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Known for its stylized and codified language of bodily expression, intricate and vibrant makeup and costuming, rhythmic soundscapes, and immersive explorations of Sanskrit epics; actors undergo rigorous training to establish the necessary breath and subtle muscle movement control required by the form

Nepathya Ensemble
Nepathya is a centre for excellence in Kutiyattam, operating since 1998 in the village of Moozhikulam in central Kerala. Moozhikulam is one of the major sites for Kutiyattam, which has flourished there for several generations. Many famous Chakyars belonging to the Ammanoor tradition were based in this village, to which the family migrated from its original home in Koppam (Malabar). Having inherited this legacy, Nepathya functions as one of the prime centres of Kutiyattam, which is taught, performed and preserved in traditional format, emphasizing the basic and characteristic aspects of this ancient art form.
Training under guru Margi Madhu Chakyar, an important practicing Kutiyattam artist who continues the Ammanur tradition and style, students at Nepathya train to become well-established, world-touring artists with international performances across the US, Canada, Germany, France, and Singapore.
This program is presented by the Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver (ICMSV) and UBC Asian Studies. This performance is supported in part by funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada
