ABOUT THE PERFORMERS
Chaia is a DJ and songwriter based in New York. She performs house and techno music using samples from Eastern European Jewish (Yiddish) folk music, with harmonies and melodies borrowed from jazz and other improvisation-forward musics. Chaia has been featured at Jewish music festivals around the world (Shtetl Berlin, Yiddish New York, and KlezKanada), as well as at global electronic music festivals (the NAMM Show, NICE, A Fest). She’s performed in collaboration with Dan Tombs (Fred. Again, Jon Hopkins) and Sidney Mills (Shabba Ranks, Madison McFerrin). Chaia’s upcoming album, Yibaneh, was mixed by Russell Elevado (Jay Z, Al Green, D'Angelo). She’s excited to share her music with you and to dance late into the night! @chaialeh
Upshtat Zingerai (oop-shtaht zing-er-ai) brings the Yiddish grooves, diasporic dance, and liberatory joy of klezmer music throughout Chicago and beyond. Yiddish for “Uptown Singalong,” Upshtat Zingerai blends traditional klezmer and Yiddish melodies with contemporary influences and additional world music traditions, all held close to the ensemble members’ hearts. Their performances are experiential, inviting audiences to join in song and dance. Recent performances have included programs hosted by the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs (JCUA), the Jewish Liberation Fund, and Pushcart Judaica’s 2023 Chicago Pop-up market, as well as performances at the South Shore Cultural Center and Color Club, where Upshtat Zingerai presented a Purim Tantshoyz: A Cabaret and Klezmer Dance Party in March 2024. The ensemble also enjoys playing music for weddings, b’nai mitzvah celebrations, parties, and other simchas and lifecycle events. The band is comprised of Hannah Mira Friedland on fiddle, Ethan Aronson on octave mandolin and vocals, Emma Blau on trombone, Jonah Lazarus on percussion, Qi Yang on accordion, and sometimes joined by special guests on clarinet. @UpshtatZingerai
