About this Event
🗓 Date & Time:
Sunday 24 August 2025Doors open: 17:30 | Performance: 17:30–19:00📍 Chisenhale Dance Space, London
Description:
Enter the depths of movement and spirit in this rare double-bill performance featuring Ken Mai, the internationally revered Japanese Butoh master, and London Butoh Dance Company in their haunting piece Of Mirrors and Shadows.
The evening marks the culmination of Ken Mai’s 3-day intensive London workshop and offers audiences a singular opportunity to witness his visionary work on stage. Drawing from decades of training in Japanese Butoh, Zen practice, mysticism, and ritual, Ken Mai’s performance conjures the invisible: a dance of purification, transformation, and spiritual invocation.
Alongside him, London Butoh Dance Company / Posthuman Theatre presents Of Mirrors and Shadows — a striking and poetic group work inspired by Aristophanes’ myth of the Androgynous from Plato’s Symposium. The piece delves into the human search for wholeness, exploring fragmented bodies, duality, and the longing to reunite with the self or other. Known for their visceral, interdisciplinary, and immigrant-led approach, LBDC weaves Butoh with posthuman thought, theatre, and immersive atmospheres.
