Virtuoso Oakland alto saxophonist and Jazzschool faculty member Kasey Knudsen convenes an all-star band featuring organ powerhouse Sundra Manning to celebrate the music of Shirley Scott. Scott, dubbed “the Queen of the Organ,” was born in Philadelphia and raised in a musical household, playing piano and trumpet before switching to the Hammond organ in the 1950s as the instrument surged in popularity. Blending bebop with gospel and soul, she made her earliest recordings with saxophone legend Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis and Stanley Turrentine, and debuted as a leader with her 1958 Prestige trio album Great Scott. Knudsen, an inventive composer and arranger, reimagines Scott’s grooving, soulful music for this special concert in honor of Women’s History Month. A pre-concert talk with Knudsen and Manning is planned at 7:30pm.Kasey Knudsen, alto saxophone
