A play by Marin Sorescu in which Jonah looks back at his life as a fisherman who gets swallowed by a whale. Jonah is a dark retelling of the biblical story of the fisherman who gets swallowed by a whale. In this play Sorescu shows the dread, fear and delirium of the protagonist, as he looks back to his life as a fisherman, recounts strange anecdotes and deals with the implications of his current condition. Along the four acts Jonah navigates deeper and deeper into the maze of the fish’s innards, as he slowly but surely discovers there may be no escape at the end of his efforts.
Existentialism is Jonah’s first philosophical harbor, but absurdism remains the last strand where reason can no longer help.
For this production Noordhaus built an immersive ambiance for the audience to share the space within the fish, together with Jonah, and become entrenched with doubts and fears that eventually seep out of the stage and tackle human condition itself.
