Discover the unique tradition of Jia Ma (甲马) Woodblock Printing, a folk printmaking practice originating from Yunnan in southwest China.
Historically used in blessing rituals and folk ceremonies, Jia Ma prints often depict protective deities, ancestral figures, and symbolic animals, expressing wishes for safety, prosperity, and good fortune.
The workshop will begin with a short introduction to the cultural background and symbolic meanings behind Jia Ma prints. Participants will then choose their favourite pattern from the tradditional Jia Ma woodblocks provided, and stamp the design onto a small card paper. Participants will carefully place the small card into a small transparent pouch, and attach it with a handmade cord, creating a small hanging blessing pendant.
Through this creative process, participants will engage with Chinese intangible cultural heritage in a tactile and accessible way, while creating a meaningful object connected to these ancient traditions of protection and blessing.
No prior experience is required. All materials will be provided.
