The Musicians:
The Jazz Legacy Project offers a unique experience that blends live jazz with storytelling. The Justin Varnes Jazz Quartet will perform the music of Louis Armstrong while sharing the historical moments that shaped his life and legacy.
The ensemble includes Justin Varnes on drums and narration, Louis Heriveaux on keyboard, John Sandfort on tenor saxophone, and Kevin Smith on acoustic bass. Each of the musicians also serves as an instructor at The Lovett School.
The Inspiration:
Louis Armstrong (1901–1971), often known as “Satchmo,” was an internationally celebrated jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and singer. He rose from a difficult childhood in New Orleans, where he first sang on the streets, to become one of the most influential figures in jazz history. After being sent to a boys’ home in 1912, he learned to play the cornet, which set the course for his career. Armstrong’s bold trumpet style and distinctive voice shaped generations of musicians. His recordings include classics such as “Star Dust” and “Hello, Dolly!” His performance of “What a Wonderful World” stands apart as a vocal-centered ballad, highlighting his expressive, gravelly voice.
