Jazz on the Lawn

Log Cabin Community Church invites you to an evening of live music at Jazz on the Lawn on Friday, May 15 at 7:00 PM. This special event will feature The Jazz Legacy Project, presenting a tribute to the legendary Louis Armstrong.

The Details:

Everyone is welcome! Bring a chair or blanket, along with your own food and soft drinks, and enjoy a relaxed evening on the lawn.

Parking is limited, so walking is encouraged for those who live nearby.

The Musicians:

The Jazz Legacy Project offers a unique experience that blends live jazz with storytelling. The Justin Varnes Jazz Quartet will perform the music of Louis Armstrong while sharing the historical moments that shaped his life and legacy.

The ensemble includes Justin Varnes on drums and narration, Louis Heriveaux on keyboard, John Sandfort on tenor saxophone, and Kevin Smith on acoustic bass. Each of the musicians also serves as an instructor at The Lovett School.

The Inspiration:

Louis Armstrong (1901–1971), often known as “Satchmo,” was an internationally celebrated jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and singer. He rose from a difficult childhood in New Orleans, where he first sang on the streets, to become one of the most influential figures in jazz history. After being sent to a boys’ home in 1912, he learned to play the cornet, which set the course for his career. Armstrong’s bold trumpet style and distinctive voice shaped generations of musicians. His recordings include classics such as “Star Dust” and “Hello, Dolly!” His performance of “What a Wonderful World” stands apart as a vocal-centered ballad, highlighting his expressive, gravelly voice.

The Venue:

Founded in 1912, Log Cabin Community Church is a non-denominational church rooted in the love of Christ. With a long-standing commitment to service and hospitality, the church offers a welcoming place for worship, friendship, and community, while maintaining a focus on faith and reverence for God.

After the show, we invite you to join us on Sunday:

  • Adult Sunday School meets at 9:45 AM in the historic cabin.
  • Worship Service begins at 10:45 AM in the chapel.
