Saxophonist Jake McMurchie is one of Bristol's best known musicians having played for many years with Get The Blessing, who have performed at festivals across Europe. Jake's other projects have included the ambient electronica of Michelson Morley, and for the past few years he has held the saxophone chair with the Jazz Defenders, pianist George Cooper's supergroup who again have played throughout the UK and have ventured across to European cities and festivals.
Rolling back a few decades, the young Jake McMurchie ran the band What Four alongside pianist Jonathan Taylor, and the two were strongly influenced by the Loose Tubes generation of players, Django Bates and Iain Ballamy both separately and together in band Human Chain, and the other prominent UK band of the time, Perfect Houseplants [Mark Lockheart, Huw Warren, Dudley Phillips and Martin France]. What Four released their debut CD Dawn to Dusk in 1996.
It is therefore with some excitement that Jake has been able to invite one of his early musical heroes, pianist Huw Warren, to join the band for tonight's gig. Huw is without a doubt a major figure in UK jazz having recorded five albums with Perfect Houseplants and many more under his own name. He has also had a longstanding collaboration with singer June Tabor. Warren also developed an interest in Brazilian music having had the chance to perform alongside the legendary composer Hermeto Pascoal, and subsequently released the album Hermeto + in 2009 featuring Pascoal's compositions. Huw's latest project and CD is Choro Choro Choro - the recording is solo piano, but Huw also performs the repertoire live with his quartet.
Joining Jake and Huw are Danish bassist Henrik Jensen, a frequent performer at the club with various projects, and Andy Hague on drums.
