Artist Jake Grewal and actor and author Russell Tovey in conversation to celebrate the launch of Under The Same Sky, Grewal’s first artist’s book, surveying key works from the artist’s practice.
Under The Same Sky is published by Studio Voltaire and Thomas Dane Gallery following Grewal’s exhibition of the same name at Studio Voltaire in London from 15 January to 13 April 2025. The artist’s book is accompanied by a limited edition two-layer woodcut print, which features a figure standing on a rock over a vague, watery landscape in inky blue, signed and numbered by the artist.
The book includes more than 160 full-colour pages, and spans the artist's oeuvre, focusing on his most recent output including, Under The Same Sky, 2025, Studio Voltaire, London; Some days I feel more alive, 2023, Pallant House Gallery, Chichester; and Now I Know You I Am Older, curated by Andrew Bonacina, 2022, Thomas Dane Gallery, London. The publication includes a conversation between Grewal and curator Andrew Bonacina, as well as a new essay by writer, film-maker and curator Philip Hoare. Published by Studio Voltaire and Thomas Dane Gallery following Grewal’s 2025 exhibition of the same name at Studio Voltaire.
About Jake Grewal
Jake Grewal (b. 1994, London) lives and works in London. In Grewal’s paintings and drawings, nude figures, nearly always male and often based on the artist’s own image, inhabit verdant forests and woodland landscapes. Unmoored from any specific time or place, Grewal’s dream-like scenes are spaces of desire and projection, where the artist’s exploration of self opens out into narratives surrounding the fractious relationship between human and nature, and the search for an idealised place of queer communion.
Selected solo exhibitions include Studio Voltaire, Pallant House Gallery and Thomas Dane Gallery and selected group exhibitions include British Museum, Bortolami Gallery, GRIMM, Victoria Miro Gallery, Maureen Paley, Michael Werner Gallery and Jhaveri Contemporary. Grewal’s work is held in numerous public collections, including The British Museum, The Hepworth Wakefield, The Fitzwilliam Museum, The Royal Collection, Government Art Collection and Pallant House Gallery. Grewal is represented by Thomas Dane Gallery.
