About this Event

Welcome to the ITI Scottish Network Spring Workshop: Translating for Disaster Risk Reduction Join us and our wonderful speaker Teresa Armijos Burneo for a day of networking and learning at The Quaker Meeting House in Edinburgh.

What to expect from the workshop:

Climate change impacts are now felt across the world. Early warning systems, weather extremes, disasters and actions to reduce risk are part of our daily lives. What is the role of translation and how does it help people access information and protect their lives and livelihoods? This talk will explore the challenges of translating and working across different languages in disaster risk reduction.

The first session will present some of the basic concepts used in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. It will use examples from the speaker’s experiences working across different languages and with indigenous communities in Latin America.

The second session will include a series of exercises where the participants will be able to explore translation challenges within the topic. We will engage with texts and material in English and other languages to explore ways in which information relevant to disaster risk may be translated in different contexts.

Networking Lunch

As usual, we will wrap up the event with lunch at Ciao Roma. If you would like to stay for lunch, please choose the appropriate ticket type (workshop + lunch). Payment for lunch will be made at the restaurant.

Don't miss out on this opportunity to grow your skills and be part of the vibrant translation and interpreting community in Scotland!

About the speaker

Teresa Armijos Burneo is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Geosciences, University of Edinburgh. She is a social scientist with an interdisciplinary background in History and Development Studies. Her research critically examines people's lived experiences of environmental change and involves careful engagement with participatory and creative methodologies to co-produce knowledge with those most affected by climate change and disasters. She has brought this approach into several collaborative interdisciplinary projects which focus on disaster risk and restorative environmental justice and work with indigenous, rural and urban communities in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Venue and location

The workshop will take place at the Quaker Meeting House, 7 Victoria Terrace, above Victoria St, Edinburgh EH1 2JL. The venue is about 10 mins walk from Waverley Station. For our networking lunch, we will be going to the nearby Ciao Roma Italian restaurant (64 South Bridge, EH1 1LS). Both venues offer wheelchair access and accessible toilets.
