In the modern world, the resurgence of conflict challenges the assumption that war can be contained by institutions, diplomacy, and legal frameworks alone. This raises a deeper ethical question: how should we understand war, and the tensions between peace and justice, compassion and duty, innocence and security? The lecture invites reflection on how individuals and societies navigate moral responsibility in times of war and conflict.
Bringing into dialogue Christian just war thinking and Dharmic approaches to the ethics of war, this session explores how each tradition understands moral responsibility when violence becomes unavoidable. It will also examine how these moral frameworks relate to modern international law, and what they reveal about the ethical tensions shaping contemporary conflicts.
