Introduction to Quilting: Make a Pieced Pillow 3-class workshop

Come join us as we play with fabric and colour and make quilted pillows! It's a great opportunity to spend time with a special friend or family member, to try something new, or get started on handcrafted gifts.

This introductory 3-session workshop will see you complete a quilted pillow. Some work will be done in class, and some at home. Yes, you will have homework!

Session 1 – Design, Fabric Selection and Piecing your block

Introduction to pillow project and finished size. Overview of tools, fabric types, and batting. Choosing fabrics and simple block layout (e.g., 4-patch, log cabin, strips, etc.) We'll cover marking and cutting fabric accurately, pressing seams, and then begin piecing the block.
Homework: Finish piecing the front

Session 2 – Edging and Assembling the Pillow Top

Add strips to the edges of your block to make it bigger or bolder if needed. Layering: stacking the backing fabric, batting, and pieced top before pinning or basting to secure the layers. Introduction to straight-line hand quilting (stitch-in-the-ditch or simple patterns) and choice of threa/needle.

Homework: Quilt your pillow top (2 weeks)

Session 3 – Assembly & Finishing the Pillow

Trimming quilted piece to final size, discuss backing/enclosure options (envelope, zipper, or buttons) and then constructing the pillow back. Aligning quilted front and backing pieces, sewing the pillow edges and finishing seams. Then it's turning and inserting the pillow form and any final touches. Washing and care instructions.

Some sewing experience, either hand or machine, is helpful but not necessary.

Bring your enthusiasm and any fabric or scraps you may want to use. All necessary supplies are provided!

You are welcome to bring your own sewing machine if you wish.
