Intimacy, Sex and Couple Therapy - with Prof. Hannah Sherbersky

A one-day workshop to explore sex and intimacy in both family and couple therapy practice. This will include an invitation to review how comfortable are you talking about sex and intimacy and with whom. We will reflect together on the significance of these important areas, and how to enhance your own clinical practice in this often undertaught area.

• Review a brief history of sexuality in systemic couple therapy
• Reflect on the views of the self of the therapist around sex/intimacy
• Explore how we extend our intersectional perspective in these areas
• Consider the presentations in couple therapy that connect to intimacy
• Reflect on the social constructs, attitudes and changes in sexual practices over time
• Think about where you do and don’t talk about sex and intimacy enough
• This workshop will not provide an in depth exploration of sexual abuse/sexual harm/ sexual exploitation – these important subjects are worthy of separate teaching
• The emphasise of this workshop is on healthy sexual and intimate relationships

About the trainer - Dr Hannah Sherbersky

Hannah Sherbersky is a Systemic Couple and Family Psychotherapist, Associate Professor at the University of Exeter and the CEO of the Association for Family Therapy and Systemic Practice. She has many years of experience working within the mental health service; as Family Therapist and as Deputy Director of PGT Taught Programmes & Co-Director of the Systemic Portfolio at the University. Here, she has helped to establish one of the most prolific systemic training providers in country. She has co-developed and manualised a model of couple therapy in a research-based couple clinic, and still works clinically as a Couple and Family Therapist and supervisor. In 2020 Hannah completed a Doctorate in Clinical Practice, researching notions of ‘home’ within an inpatient context. She presents nationally and internationally and has published on various family therapy subjects, including couple therapy. She is a past Associate Editor for the Journal of Family Therapy and is committed to the innovative delivery of systemic ideas, contributing to a BBC documentary about family therapy (2019), an online couples therapy app (2020) and several podcasts.
