About this Event
Join Newham in celebrating International Women’s Day 2026 as we honour the remarkable contributions of women in our community and inspire the next generation of girls and young women.
This year’s theme, 'Give To Gain,' highlights the power of generosity, collaboration, and shared support. When individuals and organisations give—whether through knowledge, resources, advocacy, mentoring, or time—opportunities for women multiply, and whole communities rise.
Our event will feature inspiring talks and a creative activity including:
- Athena Bashar (Modest Moves) sharing her leadership journey and experience empowering women through physical and mental wellbeing. Athena Bashar is the founder of Modest Moves and a previously competitive amateur boxer and Muay Thai fighter. With firsthand experience in the discipline, resilience, and mental strength combat sports demand, she created Modest Moves to provide women with a safe, empowering space to train, grow, and challenge themselves.
- Veronica Reveulta is an independent curator, critic and artist based in Newham. She always aims to make art and culture accessible and inclusive, creating spaces for dialogue and shared experiences. She recently led Kitchen Stories: Recipes of Belonging which continues her commitment to amplify diverse voices and celebrate food as a bridge between cultures.
- Fatima Said (Hanouna) recently participated in the Council’s Trailblazers Programme and will be sharing her story of launching Hanouna. Hanouna's debut nightwear collection is a line of natural fibre nightgowns that feel like a gentle hug. They're made from 100% cotton voile, dyed using AZO free and designed to be beautiful, breathable, and functional.
- 'Paint your Pledge' Workshop. Contribute to a communal artwork that capture’s what you will Give to Gain this International Women’s Day. Express yourself through colour, patterns and words under the guidance of local artist Momtaz Begum-Hossain.
