About this Event
We invite you to share space with us on Saturday, May 16, from 3 PM to 5 PM at The Land School for Music Is the Story: A Life in Music Supervision, Storytelling and Sync with , organized by our creative partner-in-residence, International Anthem.
In this talk, International Anthem Publishing's co-founder and Director of Licensing and Sync, Jocelyn Brown, will share her journey through the often-invisible world of music supervision, licensing and sync - the creative and strategic practice of placing songs in film, television, museums, brand campaigns, and other cultural spaces - offering an accessible look at the emotional architecture behind the music audiences hear but rarely think about.
Through personal history, career pivots, hard lessons, and defining moments, Brown's presentation traces an unorthodox path through an industry many people experience every day but seldom understand: What does a music supervisor actually do? What is a sync administrator and why do musicians need one? How does a song move from an artist's catalog into a scene that shifts how a story feels? What happens behind the scenes when artists, filmmakers, brands and institutions collaborate? How do you build a career in a field that many people don't even know exists, especially when there's no clear blueprint?
Through sharing her human story, Brown will offer insight on developing a personal relationship with music - and the friendships, partnerships and communities formed through a shared love of sound. And how it's about intuition, taste, negotiation, cultural fluency, rejection and resilience. It's about protecting artistry, translating creative vision and holding integrity within corporate and institutional spaces. It's also about living and working as part of an independent music community, and learning how to do so in a city that shapes you in return.
This conversation invites attendees to consider how music shapes memory, identity and culture. Whether you're an artist, a student, a creative professional or simply someone who loves music and is curious, participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how sound can move through story, commerce and community - and how a life can evolve and grow alongside it.
Following the presentation, from 5 PM to 8 PM, Jocelyn Brown will host a special Listening Hours session in A Listening Space, joined by her friend and fellow music supervisor. Space is limited.
We look forward to welcoming you.
