On 26th March 1986, Sterts Arts & Environmental Centre became a charity, with the aim of celebrating high quality creativity in all its forms for the benefit of the communities of South East Cornwall and beyond.Exactly 40 years to the day since the organisation’s official launch, Anne Sturrock, who began Sterts with her husband – the pioneering theatre director and teacher Ewart Sturrock – will talk about those early days and what inspired the couple to create an amphitheatre on a former pig farm.
To kick off a year of 40th anniversary events, Anne will reminisce about productions in local village halls and churches that provided the initial spark for the venture… the hard-fought permissions… the supporters… the objectors… the volunteer workforce… the rookie performers… the Secretary of State for Culture flying in by helicopter… the ground-breaking early productions… the visits by Kneehigh, John Tavener, Royal Shakespeare Company and many more.
Were you involved in Sterts in those very early days? Did you perform on its grass stage? Or did you see some of the first home-grown productions – Othello, Oh! What A Lovely War, Blue Remembered Hills, The Recruiting Officer, Peter Pan? We’d love to hear your memories.
Come along and hear Anne in conversation with playwright and former journalist, Simon Parker, who documented the arts centre’s activities over many years. Their conversation will be followed by a Q&A.
