Get out of your head and into your body. This course is for advanced improvisers who want to move beyond rules and formats and understand the freedom of improv by becoming more intuitive on stage.
The When
Every Wednesday for 6 weeks starting 25th Sepetmeber 19:00-21:30 until 30th October.
The What
This course is the first in a number of research experiments by Charlie Vero-Martin for her new book, “Improv Rules and How to Break Them.”
Participants in this course should have either completed an advanced level course or have extensive experience in longform improv comedy and are seeking to improve their ability to improvise on stage.
The objective of the course is for participants to become better improvisers by developing their intuition rather than teaching a specific format or method.
As a result, participants will hopefully form teams or twoprovs that Charlie will continue to coach.
The Why
Improv has the capacity to be an incredibly accessible, diverse and explorative form of comedy and theatre and yet it is increasingly weighed down by gatekeeping.
Rules can be useful guidelines, like stabilisers, that help some get started but at some point you have to let go. In fact, after a while they can hold you back. Improvisers who are intuitive (connected to themselves, their team and the audience) can ride anywhere.
This course (and book) prioritises developing intuition over all other constructs and ultimately questions whether many of our traditional improv rules still serve us.
The How
This course will be a holistic yet accessible approach to improv. Participants will be encouraged to engage in other forms of creative expression both in class and out. Exercises will focus on group sensitivity, impulses and flow.
It will predominantly involve scene work as a class with personal coaching from Charlie.
Classes will be capped at 12 people and be 2.5 hours long to ensure enough time for feedback. Participants must commit to the full 6 weeks and be on time.
You will need to be open to experimenting with styles and exercises that you may not have encountered in other improv workshops.
The Who
Charlie Vero-Martin is a comedian, actor and improv teacher with over 16 years experience performing improv comedy. Her methods often pull from her background in dance, puppetry and clowning.
