About this Event
How can a fragile sheet of paper change the world? From “The Brooks” broadside, credited with helping end slavery in the British Empire, to the "Votes for Women" protest signs that fueled the suffrage movement, and the 35,000 mimeographed handbills that organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott, paper has often been used to foster social change.
In this workshop, we explore how physical media continues to shape our social landscape, whether through the iconic "We the People" posters created for the 2017 Women’s March or Koko Bayer’s "Heart Project," which used wheatpasted Hope hearts to reclaim public space during a global crisis. Join us to discover how bills, broadsheets, protest signs, and posters remain our most accessible tools for mobilization, resilience, and public persuasion.
This workshop will be led by Koko Bayer, artist, curator, and granddaughter of Bauhaus artist Herbert Bayer. She will lead participants in an interactive workshop. Open to students, faculty, and community members of all fields.
