Join us for a talk by artists Rich Bhatia and Hira Khan as part of "Suitcase Lineages", currently on view at Alserkal Arts Foundation
About this Event

Two dispersed family archives are brought together as materials shaped and distorted by nation-state geography and the fragmentation of history it produces. Read through a matrilineal understanding of inheritance, the project traces parallel familial trajectories across India, Pakistan, Germany, and now the UAE—where distance does not break relation, but instead structures it.

The talk, followed by a tour with Rich Bhatia, will unpack the work through references, anecdotes, and carefully held narratives that illuminate inherited timelines and the ways ancestral memory is carried across borders.

Venue: Project Space, WH51, Alserkal Avenue (pin)

Time: 4PM - 5.30PM

Date: Saturday, 16 May 2026

The project has been made possible with the support of Goethe-Institut Golf Region and Bayt AlMamzar

Bio:

Richi Bhatia (b. 1990) is an Indian artist based in UAE and India, she works in performance, drawing, installation, food, assemblages and whatever more medium that takes to get her idea across. She is interested in the slow acts of transformation that unpack her practice through processes, collection of objects, readings, anthropological research, contemporary narratives and sound. The constructed stories seem personal at first, yet oddly open to variant degrees of access, relation, and reflection.Besides her own work Bhatia also works within the curatorial, research and alternative forms of pedagogy.

Hira Khan (b. 1993) is a Pakistani artist based in Munich, Germany. She works through sculptural research and experimental materials, often reconfiguring ready-made objects and mediums in her work, with recurrent engagement of plastics and fabrics. Khan’s thematic concerns are informed by feminist discourse, drawing parallels between personal movement and broader socio-political structures of migration and integration, using material transformation as both method and metaphor.

Khan continues to exhibit her works as an artist, alongside assisting curatorial positions at the Glockenbach Biennale, as a board member of the SAGA Grant for Arts and a member of the Mandarjazail Collective amongst her other roles.
