About this Event
“How Did I Get Here”, the second commissioned work in Drama Club’s acclaimed Hood Cycle series, made possible by a grant from Humanities New York. Collaberativly written and directed by Tiffany Cruz—a Drama Club alum who began her journey with us at Rikers Island, became an apprentice upon release and has since become a cherished Drama Club teaching artist—this powerful production delves into the lives and stories of our apprentices, all of whom are formerly incarcerated or court-involved.
More stark and dramatic than a typical Drama Club showcase, this performance examines the pivotal moments and systemic forces that shaped the paths leading to their incarceration or involvement in the court system. With unflinching honesty and raw emotion, “How Did I Get Here” invites audiences to witness the resilience and humanity of those often overlooked, while challenging us to confront the deeper questions of justice, choice, and circumstance.
The performance will be folowed by a discusssion moderated by Dario Pena; from the ensemble drama Sing Sing.
