About this Event
Description
This class is designed for those who have little or no hands-on building experience but are interested in purchasing and/or building a new home. It will include some basic blueprint reading, construction sketching, and terminology.
In the first half of the presentation, we will look for issues in buildings as illustrated in photos of the various problems encountered during actual building inspections. The second half will also use photos and handouts to focus on what is required for quality home construction that will avoid wet basements, cracked foundations, leaky chimneys and roofs, etc. We will also compare the advantages of trusses built on-site with trusses shop-built and delivered to the site.
Facilitator: William Rice, PE, retired
Bill was an on-site civil/structural engineer on large commercial building projects for construction companies in the Boston and New York areas prior to teaching related engineering courses at VTC. After teaching, Bill worked as a builder and renovator on barn and building projects in Vermont and Massachusetts. He also ran a building inspection business.
