About this Event

"Gather is a dog, but 'Gather' is about gathering together resources, people, and love." -- Judge's citation, National Book Foundation

Since 2003, Vermont Humanities has invited students, adults, and seniors across the state to read the same book and participate in a wide variety of community activities related to its themes.
This is the sixth year that the Bethel Public Library, in partnership with Vermont Humanities and Bethel University, has sponsored a book discussion around the Vermont Reads book choice. The chosen book for 2024 is Gather, by Kenneth Cadow. Gather addresses issues around its themes -- rural life, resilience, class differences, addiction, housing and food insecurity, a deep relationship to the land, and the power of community. These same issues impact every Vermont town right now, including Bethel. Join us for a discussion of this National Book Award finalist, the questions it raises, and how we are dealing with those issues in our own towns.

Professors: Lisa Campbell, Trustee, and Cathy Day, Librarian, Bethel Public Library, bethelpubliclibrary.org
Lisa Campbell is an avid reader and a trustee of the Bethel Public Library. Cathy Day, also an avid reader, has been the Bethel Public Library's librarian for thirty years. They look forward to discussing Gather with Bethel area book lovers.

Session Type: Discussion

Restrictions or Requirements: Due to the complexity of the issues addressed in the book, kids under 12 should attend the book discussion with a parent/guardian.
