The year 1954 was momentous in that both the Fitzwilliam Square site of the Italian institute of Culture, and the Italian television, saw the light.
To celebrate this joint anniversary, on Thursday 9th of May at 6.30pm, we are delighted to host live the renowned Italian journalist and literary critic Piero Dorfles, for a chat about 70 years of television history. This event is geared toward students and anyone with a passion for the subject. The meeting, in Italian, will be moderated by Trinity College Dublin Prof. Clodagh Brook.
The meeting belongs to the series Stile e Costume in Italia, which saw Dublin welcoming experts of Italian fashion, art and design.
Free admission. At the end of the meeting all guests will be invited to a toast.
ABOUT
Piero Dorfles. From journalist to head of cultural services at Giornale Radio Rai, he shaped forty years of experience in the media, creating successful radio programs such as “Il baco del millennio” and “La banda”, which enriched the Italy’s cultural debate.
He became a well-known face to the general public for his participation as a co-host on the famous television show “Per un pugno di libri” on Rai Tre, helping to spread the passion for reading and culture among viewers. Dorfles also dedicated part of his work to reflecting on the world of television and radio communication, with significant works such as “Carosello and the Atlas of Radio and Television”.
Among his most celebrated works stand out “Il ritorno del dinosauro”, a passionate defense of culture, and “I cento libri che rendono più ricca la nostra vita”, which contributed to shaping the taste and approach to reading of many people. In 2021, he published “Il lavoro del lettore”, a work that delves into the transformative importance of reading in each of our lives.
His latest contribution is the memoir “Chiassovezzano. Una casa e una famiglia temeraria in tempo di guerra” (2024), offering an intimate and moving look at his personal experience during a crucial period of Italian history. Piero Dorfles remains a reference point in the world of culture and communication, an intellectual who has managed to combine critical rigor and narrative passion, enriching the cultural heritage of his country.
