🥾 Hike Description
Our hike begins in the quiet village of Ashurst, where we set out along shady woodland trails into the heart of Kent. This early stretch of the hike offers peaceful countryside and a feeling of remoteness, with winding paths through lush greenery and rolling fields. Along the way we pass the moated Groombridge Place Manor, whose 700-year-old history includes design work by Sir Christopher Wren, famed for his reconstruction of St Paul’s Cathedral after the Great Fire of London.

The highlight of the day is reaching Harrison’s Rocks, a striking series of sandstone outcrops dating back around 135 million years. Their dramatic shapes were sculpted by the last Ice Age, and today they are a favourite with climbers whose skillful ascents we often stop to watch. Walking beneath the crags in their woodland setting is an impressive experience and a reminder of the area’s deep geological past.

From here, the trail continues across the county border into Sussex, offering far-reaching views of the surrounding hills and countryside. We walk through Broadwater Forest, a landscape of bright woodlands and rare wildlife, before descending towards our final destination.

We finish in the idyllic village of Eridge, nestled on the northern edge of East Sussex beside the Kent border. With its charming setting and sense of seclusion, it makes for a fitting conclusion to a day exploring the best of two counties, from ancient manors to Ice Age rock formations.
