ABOUT THE COLLECTION
Building on the thematic exploration of his Spring/Summer 2024 collection, "Orlando in Opulence," which delved into gender fluidity, transformation, and time travel through the lens of fashion, Hector Maclean once again draws inspiration from a significant female literary figure. This time, his collection "Into the Gloaming" is loosely based on Christina Rossetti’s 1862 poem "Goblin Market," which tells the tale of two sisters, Laura and Lizzie, who encounter goblin merchants selling enchanted fruit.
"Rossetti penned 'Goblin Market' while volunteering at the St Mary Magdalene ‘house of charity,’ a refuge that aided women in escaping prostitution and addiction," Maclean shared. "This context adds profound depth to the poem’s portrayal of the goblins’ tempting fruit, which symbolizes dangerous desire. We sought to embody this duality throughout the collection, creating a visual ‘yin and yang’ that reflects the choices everyone must confront in life."
As the collection explores themes of temptation, choice, and redemption, each look is thoughtfully designed to complement another, showcasing close color palettes while maintaining distinct characteristics. The presentation began with two models—real-life twin sisters—who emerged side by side, echoing the spirit of Gucci’s iconic SS2023 Twins Show. They walked hand in hand before parting ways and navigating the winding pathways of the transformed church courtyard, now serving as a catwalk. "The symbolic meaning behind this was to represent the various paths one can take in life," explains Maclean. "Ultimately, it conveys the idea that everyone has the opportunity for redemption, even after making mistakes."
