What is a habitat? Join CA Naturalist and Sugarloaf docent Marie Kay Hansen through the featured habitat: redwood forest. Learn what makes redwoods special, from their ability to capture fog as a water source and their need for fire during this 2-3 mile hike along parts of Goodspeed and lower Canyon Trails. This hike is the second in our four-part ‘Habitats of Sugarloaf’ hike series. The 3rd hike will focus on grasslands (https://sec.regfox.com/habitat-grasslands2026), while the 4th hike will explore the oak woodland habitat (https://sec.regfox.com/habitat-oaks2026). The previous hike explored the chaparral habitat (https://sec.regfox.com/habitat-chaparral2026).Meet at the Goodspeed parking lot. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for youth (12-17 year olds), students, Sugarloaf members, Sugarloaf or RFO volunteers, and free for children under 12. Wear layers, appropriate footwear for muddy and/or slippery trails, bring at least a quart of water, sun protection, and if desired, a snack and binoculars. Heavy rain cancels. Parking fees apply.
Ease of access: The Goodspeed Trail does not have accessible parking, bathrooms, potable water, or cell service. Goodspeed Trail is an out-and-back dirt trail. The first several hundred feet is a rough foot trail down to Sonoma Creek. The next several hundred feet (including bridges over two creeks) is mostly flat. The remainder of the trail is mostly steep with steps and a rugged climb through serpentine chaparral. Back on Adobe Canyon Rd, the lower Canyon trailhead is approximately ½-mile from the Goodspeed parking lot. The lower portion of Canyon Trail is a narrow dirt trail that descends a few feet from the road (there are built-in steps). The trail flattens as it comes to the bottom of the canyon where the redwood grove is located.
