About this Event
Part of Theatreship's guest nights - where contemporary artists take over the ship to highlight the stories they want to tell.
In this edition, we welcome Django Chutney and Masaika onboard.
Here's some more info from them:
A very special night, with 3 scheduled performances. Django Chutney will perform a set of classic gypsy-jazz; Mazaika will perform a set of their unique blend of world-folk. This will be followed by a performance with both acts together, combining virtuosic jazz, violin, accordion and world music.
Django Chutney have been described as a virtuosic gypsy-jazz ‘manouche et trois’, with equal parts due respect for the genre, unruly chaotic energy, and a huge dose of tongue-in-cheek humour.
Combining tightly woven three part vocal harmonies reminiscent of 30’s and 40’s American vocal groups the Mill’s Brothers and the Ink Spots; ridiculous guitar show-offery that draws as much from Django Reinhardt as it does from Guthrie Govan; Double bass solo’s that drag Pop’s Fosters slap technique kicking and screaming into the 21st century; and a repertoire that’s seemingly firmly rooted in the 30’s Hot Club era, but will suddenly transport you through decades and styles, from New Orleans jazz, to Chicago blues and Parisian Musette, effortlessly, respectfully, but most importantly: with true joie de vivre!
Mazaika combine violin, domra, accordions, theatricality, and humour to create a show full of dazzling virtuosity and intoxicating passion!
Having spent the past two decades enchanting audiences from the Cadogan Hall to Glastonbury and far beyond, they will transport you from the fairytale Russian Steppe to a flickering Romany campfire with the slip of a bow.

Theatreship is committed to broadening access to the arts - we know that ticket price is a huge barrier for some. If the regular ticket price is beyond what you feel able to afford for whatever reason, please don't hesitate to email us at [email protected] and we will do everything we can to help, no questions asked.
We also offer arts supporter tickets, for those that can, to pay a higher price to support the venue, the artists who perform here and subsidised tickets for others.
Due to the historic nature of the ship, we’re sorry to say there is not currently step-free access into the theatre space. We have dedicated staff on hand to help with stairs, and an onsite wheelchair once you’re inside the venue. If you have any access needs, please do e-mail us at [email protected].
