About this Event
Join us for Barnyard Best Picks, a self-paced online course designed to teach the fundamentals of animal evaluation and judging contests! Whether you're preparing for spring judging contests or simply want to expand your knowledge, this program is perfect for youth of all experience levels—no prior experience is required.
Participants will gain valuable skills in observation, critical thinking, and decision-making as they explore four exciting programs:
- Livestock Evaluation
- Horse Evaluation
- Dairy Evaluation
- Meat Evaluation (Note: While there is no state-level 4-H meat evaluation contest, FFA members may compete.)
What are evaluation contests?
Evaluation contests challenge participants to assess and rank animals or products based on specific criteria, such as quality, structure, and purpose. Contests often include placing classes, where participants rank a group, and reasons or questions classes, where they explain or justify their decisions.
Why should someone study animal evaluation?
Animal evaluation teaches youth critical life skills like decision-making, communication, and attention to detail while deepening their understanding of agriculture and livestock production. These skills not only prepare participants for judging contests but also provide valuable knowledge for future careers and everyday decision-making.
Who can do this program?
This program is open to youth ages 5-18, but much of judging involves attention to detail and critical thinking. Parents and guardians are encouraged to consider whether the material and pace are a good fit for their child's individual readiness and learning style. Note that there may not be state-level contsts for Cloverbud ages (5-8).
To enhance your learning experience, at least one in-person clinic will be offered. While participation in the clinic is not required, it is highly recommended to gain hands-on practice and connect with experienced judges and peers.
Start your journey toward mastering animal evaluation and become confident in judging contests. Sign up today and discover your best picks in the barnyard!
