In the 13th century, a mysterious piper arrived in Hamelin. When he left, he took the town’s children with him. In this talk, we’ll take a deep dive into the legend of the Pied Piper, changes to the legend over times, and various theories about the history behind the tale. We'll also look at a sampling of the wide range of ways that the story has been depicted in art, literature, film, and other media from the Middle Ages to now, with a focus on supernatural and horror elements, as well as how storytellers from different countries have adapted the tale to reflect concerns from their histories and cultures.
