About this Event
June selection: The Odyssey, by Homer
Join us for a discussion of The Odyssey by Homer, a sweeping tale of adventure, resilience, and the enduring pull of home. The story follows Odysseus as he journeys for ten years after the Trojan War, encountering gods, monsters, and moral trials, while his wife Penelope cleverly holds off persistent suitors in Ithaca. Beyond its vivid storytelling, The Odyssey stands as a cornerstone of Classical Literature, shaping the hero’s journey and influencing countless works across centuries. At our book club, we’ll explore its timeless themes—identity, loyalty, fate, and personal growth—and discuss why this foundational epic continues to resonate so powerfully today.
Note: There are several well known translations of the Odyssey. Please pick the one most suitable for you:
- Best overall for modern readers: Emily Wilson (2017)
- Best balance of poetry and accessibility: Robert Fagles (1996)
- Best for literary/poetic feel: Robert Fitzgerald (1961)
