Version control sits at the heart of reproducible, collaborative research — but many of us have been putting it off. This two-hour, beginner-friendly session introduces Git and GitHub in a practical, no-nonsense way, aimed at researchers who want to understand what version control is, why it matters for open science, and how to start using it confidently in their own work. No prior experience is assumed.
The first hour will be a guided walkthrough covering core concepts (what Git is, how it works, and common workflows), best practice for research projects, and how GitHub fits into an open science framework. This will include live demonstrations using both the command line and graphical tools, plus a short collaboration demo showing how multiple people can work on the same project. The second hour will be fully hands-on: participants will set up Git and GitHub on their own laptops, create a project, make and push changes, and practice basic collaboration, with support throughout.
