GIRLS! THE TECH COMMUNITY NEEDS YOU! THIS EVENT IS ORGANISED ESPECIALLY FOR YOU! COME AND JOIN US AND GET INVOLVED!
I am delighted to invite you to our IN-PERSON "Girls Into Coding " event! It's a free event. Choose 1 of 4 exciting workshops. There will also be lightning talks to inspire & encourage girls aged 11 -14 to get involved in tech. Each participant can only book one workshop because they will run simultaneously.
You will be able to explore coding activities, coding, robotics, electronics, and physical computing using the Raspberry Pi, and the Micro: bit. This is a fantastic opportunity to use Python, Micropython (text-based language), and Microsoft Makecode while getting some hands-on making time.
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTION READ CAREFULLY:
If you book more than one ticket per participant, your booking will be automatically cancelled.
Please note that as this is a small collaborative event it may be necessary to move one of your daughters to a different workshop to balance out the number of participants in each workshop.
Please do not register your daughter for a workshop she has already participated in or your ticket will be automatically cancelled.
WORKSHOPS:
Workshop #1 (Age 11 to 14): Automated harvesting machine
The girls must be between 11 and 14 to attend this workshop. In this workshop, you will build an automatic harvesting machine! During the workshop, you will "grow" some electronic fruit. You will then build and code a machine that can detect when the fruit is ripe and automatically harvest it. The activity uses a Raspberry Pi Pico, and a variety of motors, sensors, and engineered parts. Coding will be in Python.
Workshop #2: Air Quality Pavilion (Age 12-14)
Build a scaled down automated Air Quality Pavilion and code it to monitor & respond to co2 levels in order to improve the internal air quality. The girls will explore using stepper motors, servos, sensors, the Microbit, and Makecode in this workshop.
Workshop #3: Build a virtual environment & explore with your own built VR set! (Age 11-14)
Build a virtual environment using CoSpaces that can be explored with a VR headset.
You will build the environment which will be a maze and have objects that can be interacted with along the way. This will be achieved using the range of features in CoSpaces and coding blocks called CoBlocks to give objects characteristics.
Material needed: A mobile phone
Workshop #4: Build a hand-held camera. (For Ages 11-14)
We'll put together a Raspberry Pi, mini-screen, and a few buttons. Add a camera module. We'll program your camera to take pictures and review images. Add enhanced features, like time-lapse!
LIGHTNING TALKS:
Radhita Jain - From using tech to building it
Radhita is an interaction designer who makes messy, high-stakes systems make sense — anything that turns head-scratching complexity into "oh, got it."
Her work is grounded in research and user-centred design — from interactive maps and data stories to user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and polished UI. She cares about clarity and usability: finding the right form for each story, scaling it responsibly, and making sure it feels intuitive, human, and maybe even a little delightful.
She's especially drawn to designing systems that help people understand information, make decisions, and take action; particularly when the domain is complex or evolving. She works closely with researchers, developers, and product teams to turn insights into thoughtful product experiences. On the side, she explores playful and experimental projects: writing newsletters, making games in Google Sheets ︎ and exploring coding with AI.
