GIRLS! THE TECH COMMUNITY NEEDS YOU! THIS EVENT IS ORGANISED ESPECIALLY FOR YOU! COME AND JOIN US AND GET INVOLVED!
I am delighted to invite you to our IN-PERSON "Girls Into Coding " event! It's a free event. Choose 1 of 3 exciting workshops. There will also be lightning talks to inspire & encourage girls aged 11 -14 to get involved in tech. Each participant can only book one workshop because they will run simultaneously.
You will be able to explore coding activities, robotics, engineering, electronics, and physical computing using the Raspberry, the Micro: bit. This is a fantastic opportunity to use Python, Micropython (text-based language), and Microsoft Makecode while getting some hands-on making time.
IF YOU BOOK MORE THAN ONE TICKET PER PARTICIPANT, YOUR BOOKING WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY CANCELLED.
THE 3 WORKSHOPS BELOW WILL RUN SIMULTANEOUSLY - THEREFORE EACH PARTICIPANT SHOULD ONLY BOOK ONE WORKSHOP.
PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER YOUR DAUGHTER FOR A WORKSHOP SHE HAS ALREADY PARTICIPATED IN OR YOUR TICKET WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY CANCELED.
WORKSHOPS:
Workshop #1 (Age 11 to 14):Automated harvesting machine
The girls must be between 11 and 14 to attend this workshop. In this workshop, you will build an automatic harvesting machine! During the workshop, you will "grow" some electronic fruit. You will then build and code a machine that can detect when the fruit is ripe and automatically harvest it. The activity uses a Raspberry Pi Pico, and a variety of motors, sensors, and engineered parts. Coding will be in Python. The girls must be between 11 and 14 to attend this workshop
Workshop #2: Automated Refill Machine: Tech for Tomorrow's Circular Economy (Age 12-14)
The girls must be between 12 and 14 to attend this workshop
This workshop will get you thinking about the circular economy by exploring how technology can be used to reduce waste & the reliance on single-use plastic.
You will link everyday electronic components with a microcontroller - apply some coding principles to build a scaled-down automated refill station for household products - something that may influence how we buy more of our products in the future.
Workshop #3: Build a virtual environment & explore with your own built VR set! (Age 11-14)
Build a virtual environment using CoSpaces that can be explored with a VR headset.
You will build the environment which will be a maze and have objects that can be interacted with along the way. This will be achieved using the range of features in CoSpaces and coding blocks called CoBlocks to give objects characteristics.
Experience:
Basic working knowledge of block-based code would be beneficial but beginners are welcome! They will be guided by instruction sheets and a live tutorial.
Material needed: A mobile phone
LIGHTNING TALKS:
Mellina Ezzahir
Mellina is twelve and enjoys coding. She got into coding through clubs like Coderdojo, Stemettes and Girls Into Coding. She also likes art , music and cats . Some of her favourite projects include a plant tracker app made in react native and a tower defence game, the start of a Zelda inspired game and a game where you find keys to open a chest and receive rewards, all in unity. She has attended Girls Into Coding for several years and has continued robotics at home by experimenting with microbit and arduino. She has also recently been into cyber security but hasn't attained any major milestones yet.
TERMS OF PARTICIPATION:
Each participant can only choose one workshop. Each workshop lasts approximately 2 hours
Tickets are limited to 2 maximum per family // Please register the participant only, parents do not need to register.
Please do not register your daughter for a workshop she has already participated in or your ticket will be automatically canceled.
