About this Event
Gestures, Gebaren is a proposed community art project that celebrates and reconnects residents with local culture and history through craftsmanship and participatory artistic practices. Rooted in the Bellamybuurt in Oud-West, but open to all Amsterdam’s residents, the project aims to foster inclusive engagement, social cohesion, and community empowerment through the co-creation of art and its fruition in the public space.
The project builds on the success of and , two community-driven art projects realized by Daniele Scauso in the streets of the Bellamybuurt in 2021 and 2020.
In this new iteration, the artist deepens the participatory element of the collaboration with the community by opening the doors of his unique studio space in the hearth of Amsterdam Oud-West, and resourcing people's hands and creativity for the production of a large-scale artwork.
At the heart of the project are in fact a series of hands-on workshops taking place in the Atelier Meister-Scauso. Over the course of five months, local residents - but not exclusively - will be given the opportunity to step in the shoes of an artist, getting their hands dirty by joining him in the design and fabrication of the artwork.
Once completed, the collective artwork will be first revealed to the public during an indoor exhibition in the neighbourhood, and later, will be exhibited outdoors from June to August 2026, for all residents and passers-by to enjoy.
The workshops will be held in english and in dutch.
