Gertrude Stein - the most famous author nobody reads. Nobody reads her because nobody understands her. This show tells how and why she became more famous than Eleanor Roosevelt in 1934, when a certain ship sailed into New York harbor, all the way from Paris. And Times Square said, in big lights, GERTRUDE STEIN HAS ARRIVED., GERTRUDE STEIN HAS ARRIVED, GERTRUDE STEIN HAS ARRIVED, and Alice B. Toklas said, "As if we didn't know."
If you know the name of Alice B. Toklas, you may have read her autobiography, which she actually didn't write, or her famous cookbook, which she actually did write. Come spend an hour with Gertrude dishing about Alice (that "tiny dish of delicious") and you may go away feeling positively gay (they're famous for that, too). And "rose is a rose is a rose," Gertrude's most famous line. And Alice's favorite thing to say? "Now don't come home with Hemingway on your arm."
Here is the puzzle we shall try to solve: how did Gertrude and Alice survive the Nazi occupation of France? They lived in exile from their home in Paris for 4 1/2 years. How were these two Jewish lesbians never arrested?
