About this Event
This Fragile Earth, Our Island Home — Gaia at the Cathedral of the Incarnation
Come join us for an unforgettable experience beneath a slowly turning Earth! Explore the beauty and wonder of our planet, suspended in three dimensions in the soaring neo-gothic nave of the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City.
Gaia is a touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram. Measuring 20 feet in diameter, the sculpture features detailed NASA imagery of Earth's surface, internally lit and slowly rotating — offering visitors the perspective that only astronauts have known: our world as it truly is, luminous, whole, and astonishingly fragile.
The installation is accompanied by an original surround sound composition by BAFTA award-winning composer Dan Jones, transforming the Cathedral nave into something approaching a sacred encounter with Creation itself. This is the first time Gaia has been exhibited in an American house of worship.
Evening tours are open during selected evenings throughout the residency, and all are welcome! This is a wonderful experience for artists, seekers, photographers, families, seniors, and anyone moved by the beauty of our planet.
