Written by famed Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki and directed by his son Gorō, From Up on Poppy Hill is the story of Umi and Shun, two high school students who, half-looking for an excuse to spend more time together, decide to renovate the school’s dilapidated clubhouse. But along the way they find their lives are more entangled than they ever knew, and their desire to revive a place that has fallen into disrepair and disregard may have more to do with themselves than they initially realized. Sweet, delicate and poignant, From Up on Poppy Hill is a stunningly realized “time-machine dream” of a past that the characters (and the audience) barely even remember — fitting, for a project from a son who has had trouble receiving the approval of his famously demanding father.
